What's that you're saying Ya ain't got no time? That's an understatement I know I ain't got mine Yeah, while you're slavin' Every single day Someone's engravin' Words on your grave So don't read between the lines Everything is fine Everybody's dyin' And there ain't much time I hear you talkin' What did you say? I hear you talk, talk, talk, talk But what did you say? Your words mean nothin' They're thin as air No they mean noth-noth-noth-nothin' I just don't care So don't read between the lines Everything is fine Everybody's dyin' And there ain't much time Look at your social climbers Talkin' smart and talkin' loud They're gettin' high, high, high Never comin' down You got it made, babe You got it swell Friends in high places Oh, the stories you could tell So don't read between the lines Everything is fine Everybody's dyin' And there ain't much time Mike Starling: vocals, acoustic guitars Mark Lakmann: trombone, bass trombone, horn arrangement Hans Mayer: bass Dave Purcell: drums, tambourine Words and music ©1992 Mike Starling Published by Bean Hoy Music (BMI)

Girl and boy, both age two What's the difference between the two? Is the thing already set Or is it to be learned yet? Girl and boy pullin' doggy's tail Poor little puppy starts to wail Girl says stop, he don't like it Boy keeps pullin' 'til he gets bit Boys can't be trusted Man and boy, age 22 What's the difference between the two? One don't lie because he loves One don't care but says he does Scientists have the cure To stop babies before they grow One for girls, one for boys Guess who gets to make the choice? Mr. Drysdale, Granny, Ellie Mae and Jeffro Maxwell Smart and 99, the Green Hornet and Kato That teacher guy on Kung Fu How’d they get his eyes to be so white? He’d say “Ah so, now grasshopper’’ To me every Wednesday night My 19-inch teacher Measured diagonal Weren’t no Trinitrons or Sonys And black-and-white was all we could afford My electronic teacher Beamin’ lessons from coast to coast My ghostly one-way mirror Feedin’ us the shit we love the most I remember cartoons pushin’ all those Hot Wheels that I craved Scooby Doo and Spiderman, Fred and Barney livin’ in a cave My sister she loved Lucy, every day she watched that show I remember movies chopped up til they were unrecognizable To save my virgin ears, I suppose My 19-inch teacher Measured diagonal Weren’t no Trinitrons or Sonys And black-and-white was all we could afford My electronic teacher Beamin’ lessons from coast to coast My ghostly one-way mirror Feedin’ us the shit we love the most Mike Starling: vocals, acoustic guitar Mark Lakmann: trombone, bass trombone, horn arrangement Hans Mayer: bass, Danelectro “scratch” guitar Dave Purcell: drums, tambourine, cowbell Jason Knox: piano Words and music ©1992 Mike Starling Published by Bean Hoy Music (BMI)

ACOUSTIC ROOTS-FUNK ... WITH TROMBONES!

Why can't boys be trusted? Were the '70s cool or just dumb? What on earth is a 19-inch teacher? And hey, what is UP with my short-term memory? On “Don’t Read Between the Lines,” songwriter Mike Starling ponders dilemmas big and small to a sly roots-funk groove.

This collection of tunes got its start back in the mid-'90s in a series of live-in-the-studio sessions with Starling, Dave Purcell and Hans Mayer, with additional vocals and instruments overdubbed in the home studio of Jason Knox. Most notable are the tasty trombone lines by Mark Lakmann, who at the time was a member of the Horns of Vengeance, a brass section backing Starling in live gigs.

This is the first time that all the recordings from these sessions have been collected together in one release. The last piece of the puzzle came about in the fall of 2023, when Starling went back into the studio with Lakmann to put the finishing touches on the previously unreleased title track, proving once again the old adage that when it comes to music, it’s better late than never.

Or, as the chorus of that song goes: “Don’t read between the lines – everything is fine.”

Really. Trust us.
