Four o'clock in the morning And I can't go to sleep So much cocaine in my brain I know the price is pretty steep And I've long since come down But I'm still up like a wire I’m talkin' like Tom Snyder on a bad night I could be a liar Got some gin in the kitchen Some tonic in the frig We could mix ourselves one more Take off a little of the edge And I've long since come down But I'm still up like a wire I’m talkin' like Tom Snyder on a bad night I could be a liar The birds are awake in the trees outside Makin’ a whole lot of noise MTV pulses on endlessly In the living room And I've long since come down But I'm still up like a wire I’m talkin' like Tom Snyder on a bad night I could be a liar Mike Starling: vocals, guitar, bass Bob Mueller: drums

Yeah the girl in the backseat She look awful sweet I heard my friend say The world on the street The beat hop the beat beat Move like a stick stingray Think of catchin' the rays Wastin' your days All right Right Think of seein' the world With a grr-grr-grr-girl All right All right Out on my bike 700 CCs And a Windjammer Catchin' the breeze And the ladies say hey Need a play-place to stay Live-live-livin' ease Checkin’ the mail Settin' sail settin' sail Feel like 90 degrees Wind in my face Set-set-settin' pace Play-play life is a breeze Think of catchin' the rays Wastin' your days All right Right Think of seein' the world With a grr-grr-grr-girl All right All right Mike Starling: vocals, guitar, bass Bob Mueller: drums

Miles and miles of highway A long unfriendly road Separate us baby When it's you I wanna hold I don't like this feeling Or how it turned out this way But I know it's all my doing That we're apart today You know I miss you when you're gone I’m not sure how to get along Yeah I miss you when you're gone Wish you were here to sing along The drummer's in the corner He's playin' all night long You know he's got the beat But he can't hear the songs And all the dancers dancin' Bartenders pourin' beer I look all through the place But you're just not here You know I miss you when you're gone I don't wanna end this song Babe I miss you when you're gone Wish you were here to sing along Mike Starling: vocals, guitar, bass Bob Mueller: drums

Way WAY before AI (and the internet, for that matter) was a thing, we were already speculating about a computerized love connection. The downtime blues indeed... My baby's a microchip On an IBM mainframe I see her on downtime Interface so fine My baby's a microchip I got her access code Punch it up on downtime Interface so fine Downtime blues, that’s the news Downtime blues, this does not compute My baby's so fast I’m done in nanoseconds End run, escape Game of Pacman to unwind My baby's a microchip You know she's pretty hip My baby's erotic My baby's electronic Downtime blues, that’s the news Downtime blues, this does not compute Downtime blues, so what’s new Downtime blues, this does not compute Mike Starling: vocals, guitar, bass Bob Mueller: drums, backing vocals

Why is the world filled with such ugly people? Why can't they be more like me? Why is the world filled with such ugly people? It is baby, look and see Why is the world filled with such stupid people? Why can't they be more like you? Why is the world filled with such stupid people? Look around, you’ll see that it’s true We're so good, and they're so bad We're the best thing the human race ever had So send up a cheer, and do it again Be happy that we're not like them Why is the world filled with such lazy people? Why can't they be more like us? Why is the world filled with such lazy people? We’re the only ones you know you can trust We're so good, and they're so bad We're the best thing the human race ever had So send up a cheer, and do it again Be happy that we're not like them Mike Starling: vocals, guitar, bass Bob Mueller: drums, backing vocals

Sea tales, hate mail that you send Details of the the life we led Facts that straight could be misread What was meant wasn’t what was said Don’t tell me where to go Cuz I don’t wanna know Life of leisure, life of ease Pain and sufferin’, sin and greed Lines, your face, your mirrors, your bed Did you mean it when you said Don’t tell me where you go Cuz I don’t wanna know Things I hide and you find out Vow and scream and cry and shout Curiosity kills more than cats Can’t you try to accept that? Don’t tell me where you go Cuz I don’t wanna know Mike Starling: vocals, guitar, bass Bob Mueller: drums

about

15 TRACKS OF FEISTY HEARTLAND GARAGE ROCK'N'ROLLA

Recorded over a few months of woodshedding in a makeshift basement studio in Oskhosh, Wisconsin in 1986-87, “50¢ Millionaire” is 15 tracks of cool lo-fi garage rock with a bloozy bent and plenty of punk-ass DIY attitude.

Songwriters Mike Starling and Bob Mueller had recently moved on from their group Your Missing Socks and were looking for some simpatico new musicians to jam with in Wisconsin’s Fox Valley.

Nothing was really panning out, so they began recording some new tunes on their own with a recently purchased 4-track cassette recorder. Basic tracks with one mic on Starling’s guitar amp and another on Mueller’s drum kit, reserving the remaining two for bass and vocal overdubs and the occasional lead guitar or other odd instrument (organ, marimba).

With no plan in place to release any of these tunes, they have lingered “in the vault” ever since as the two friends went on to other career pursuits and creative projects.

The songs make their world premiere here in May 2023 as the third release in Starling’s 4-Track Cassette Reclamation Project series.
