Imagine yourself drifting down a lazy, shady slough, sun high in the sky, dragonflies darting in the breeze. Or watching a tugboat throw its spotlight on the nighttime river as it moves its barge cargo upstream. This is the sound of “Backwaters" by Mike Starling.

"Backwaters" is a suite of six loosely linked instrumental guitar ensemble pieces inspired by the natural beauty of the Upper Mississippi River Valley in the Driftless Region of the American Midwest.

Starling built these earthy and soulful soundscapes on a foundation of acoustic, electric and bass guitars – seasoned with a variety of instruments including organ, ocarina, cuica, didgeridoo, bodhran and other percussion. See individual tracks for full music credits.

For a limited time, the album is free to download. We ask that those who are able consider making a small donation to the Friends of the La Crosse River Marsh to help preserve the wetlands of western Wisconsin, one of the inspirations for this music.
